As a rich Swedish family celebrates the birthday of his patriarch Alexander (Erland Josephson, shouts and whispers), news from World War II outbreak reaches his remote Baltic Island – and Happy Humor turns into horror. The family descends to a state of psychological devastation, brilliantly evoked by the palette of tarkovsky arrests of luminous ash washing the dark landscape in his home. (The masterful cinematography of the film is by Sven Nykvist, Ingmar Bergman’s longtime collaborator).
